Padded out with Filler or Filled out with Padding? March 9, 2008 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
The book is filled with wretched truisms, armchair philosophizing and the mentioning of the banal trivia of human life, in a folksy "Aint that just so" kind of way, which is condescending and patronizing as well as being very frustrating to read. The plot crawls along. I dont mean crawls, i mean it slithers. No i dont i mean it goes into a state of hibernation.
Fan-bloody-tastic January 18, 2008 King is such a fabulous author, and fires my imagination to such an extent, that sometimes when I think back to a book of his that I have read - I feel like I have watched a film of it instead - I can clearly see his characters and settings in my minds eye, which is why, in my view, King can do no wrong. I lost myself in this book, and was so absorbed by Ralphs story, that I burst into tears at the conclusion of this book.
Five stars says it all..... January 11, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
...so I won't go on too much about the plot etc, as other reviewers have done it for me.
As a lover of King's books, I can't believe that I had overlooked this one. I recently brought it from a charity shop and thoroughly enjoyed it. Admittedly you do have to suspend reality, but what King ultimately creates, as he does with so many of his books, is a story of good over evil, love, friendship and self- sacrifice. It's also nice to see an older person being the central character for a change and King creates a very believable character- old in the body, but not old in the soul.
Please don't listen to the negative reviews- this is a fantastic book. It will stay in your mind long after you have finished it.
What an imagination November 16, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you're expecting a classic horror story, look elsewhere. It's basically about an old guy who finds himself unable to sleep, and the strange (very, very strange!) consequences of his insomnia. It requires time at the start to fully set the scene. Some say this is too long, I think it is just right.
I became totally absorbed in the book and the lives of the characters. I love the way Stephen King is so descriptive, it makes everything in the book seem so real and believeable. How does he think of these things?
Pure genius!
Maybe a cure for insomnia after all September 23, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is not one of King's best novels. I'm fairly new to his work but have read a fair few novels now, and this I found to be the most disappointing.
I think that at his best, Stephen King is a compelling writer because of the way in which he can explore the human mind and psyche. In other words, I have never read his work for the monsters or the horror and the supernatural. Unfortunately, 'Insomnia' is mostly a trawl through a supernatural world of King's own design with less character exploration than you will find in novels such as 'Misery' and the Bachman books.
At 600+ pages, 'Insomnia' felt incredibly long-winded as I read it. The amount of plot and events in here just doesn't justify that page length, it could easily have been half as long without sacrificing anything. Unfortunately this seems somewhat typical of King's later work, where he takes an age to say not very much at all.
Basically the problem I had with this novel was that the characters weren't explored deeply enough, but there were plenty of rambling passages where the supernatural incidents were explained to death...call me crazy but I think if something needs explaining in that much depth, the author hasn't done a very good job of drawing the reader into his world.
If you're new to King, definitely don't start here. Try 'Misery' or 'The Shining' and take it from there. I would recommend this for die-hard fans only, or for anyone who has trouble sleeping at night...'Insomnia' ironically should send you off to sleep pretty quickly.
