Stephen King and Anne Heche. A beautiful couple. January 29, 2007

First off, I'm an American but could not get the audio book right now over here, so I ordered it from the UK. When I got this from Amazon, I was a little disappointed to read on the back that it is "abridged". Since I have the regular hardcover, I decided to read it along with Anne Heche the first time through. Abridged? I'm not sure what their definition is, but abridged is not what I would call it. There is nothing eliminated at all from the written word. On the contrary, a few exclamations and dramatizations have been added. Not many. (a few ughs, errs, and oh my gods is all) I think Anne mispronounced a word and flip-flopped a couple too. But this is the full story.
At any rate, I like to listen to audio books while I am at work. It's very fulfilling to keep my mind active and productive during my more mundane tasks. (I didn't get much done with this one though, as I was following it along in the book) This is one of the best audio books I own. Anne's dramatization of the story with her characterizations is excellent, but certainly not overdone. She adds so much to the texture and immediacy. The "being there" feel. The production is excellent, with musical interludes, "talking into a can sounds" when Trisha is listening to the radio, and Anne Heche's voices. I would certainly put her performance on the level of Jim Dale's Harry Potter readings. Equal to them. Totally enjoyable, engaging and well acted.
The story is not the Stephen King with the heart rending terror of vampires, and icky goblins, but more of the personal terror and real horror from introspective, sensitive, character driven stories which he is capable of. (and excels at) I have two daughters (9 and 13), so keep that in mind when I say this is the scariest story of his that I have ever read/listened to. (and one of the most fulfilling) That includes It, The Shining and Salem's Lot. I won't tell you how it ends, but by the last pages there were tears running down my face, and I was hoping that nobody would come into the shop for a few minutes while I got myself under control. Then I listened to the end again. And once more. It was like Pavlov's dogs.
I'll be keeping it on my MP3 player for awhile.
