My favourite writer (William, 6 and 10 months) April 26, 2002 16 out of 19 found this review helpful
I love Eva Ibbotson, she is my favouirte writer, even more than Narnia and Harry Potter. I've read The Secret of Platform 13 and Monster Mission and The Haunting of Hiram so far and I am going to read them ALL but this is my favouirte so far.A boy called Daniel finds out that A WITCH has come to live in his town and runs a pet shop luckily she isnt a bad witch but a good witch and she turns bad people into animals with her magic toe because as soon as they are animals they arent bad any more. First she changes a nasty woman who runs a nasty home for old people then she changes a battery chicken farmer into a fish and then she is going to change a very bad man who hates black people into a tiger. Only her best friend Dora, who is a stone witch turns him into a statue first! And Mr. Knapsack, who is an evil furrier and wants Heckie (thats the witches name) to turn people into tigers so he can kill and skin them is FURIOUS. Heckie doesnt know that Mr.Knapsakc is a baddie because her dragworm, a cross between a dragon and a lowly worm, who is a WIckedness Detector, isnt allowed near him but Daniel knows and so do the other children and wizards only Heckie wont listen because she and Dora are both IN LOVE with him. Its really exciting and funny and Im not going to say any more except READ IT!!!!!
Another gem from this magical writer March 18, 2002 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
Ibbotson is at her best when combining the practicalities of real ife (such as running a small shop) with the problems likely to beset the supernatural. Heckie and her best friend (with whom she falls out)are gorgeously eccentric creations. We all read this on holiday, one after the other, and drove each other mad laughing.
