A fresh approach to the game. January 4, 2008 Sherlock (Worksop) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Although the timescale of 7 days is a little optimistic, this book is guaranteed to make you think differently about chess. For example, the author categorises players by the openings they choose, such as 'Pirates' or 'Cavemen', and helps you decide how to deal with them. What helped me the most, I feel, is the 'Predict-a-Move' method, whereby you anticipate what the opponent is about to play, and use that knowledge to plan your attack. The 'Art of Swindling' is also covered, a topic not always explained in run-of-the-mill books. The cartoons breathe a little fresh air into what can be a dry subject at times.
Winning Chess November 9, 2007 George Gale (Birmingham) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Can you improve in 7 days? I would say yes and on the way you smile at the comments or admire the numerous chess cartoons. This is for players who are keen to become better or someone who hasn't taken the game too seriously in the past. The book is predictably divided into 7 chapters to focus on a different area of your game every day. With my record the one about Avoiding Blunders is currently proving useful. I would say it is a very handy book for anyone rated up to 175 which is I think is a 2000 elo. It makes it intersting to improve your game and the tips and suggestions are things that I have never really thought about before. The endgame section is a tiny bit serious but the 5 rules about rook endings make life easier. If you want to improve by reading the occasional chapter and have a sense of humour then this is the book for you.
Made Me Want to Play Chess Again July 24, 2007 Mark Franklin (Bromley) 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
Gary Lane has produced a 1st class book with all sorts of practical advice. It's really for the casual player up to a rating of 2000 who knows how to play but wants to win some games. There are a number of funny cartoons to make it readable.Although it does contain a number of interesting and well-chosen illustrative positions. It is only now that I realise predict-a-move is the reason why I have lost so many games but maybe I can now reverse that situation. The book is about winning approaches, and pretty much anything ethical is included. Reading this will certainly improve your game and get you thinking more offensively. I like the way he explains things. The simplicity is rare in chess books.
