Excellent, Excellent, Excellent! August 30, 2008 Peg Phillips (London) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I cannot believe that this book has had such bad reviews so far. As far as I'm concerned it belongs right up there with Stephen King's 'On Writing'. The book, in the form of Maeve Binchy's letters and short essays from other experts in the world of writing, provides clear, succinct advice on the business of being a writer. This is not a 'how-to' book to teach you the craft of writing, rather it's a 'get-on-with-it' book - you have the idea for a story, now no excuses, start writing. I found this book to be a refreshing change from other long-winded books on the subject, where you have to wade through so much waffle before finding any helpful information. With regard to one of the negative reviews below - It's totally incorrect to say that 90% of the information pertains only to those living in Ireland. Maeve Binchy has sold more than 50 million books in 40 countries (isn't Google great?), it seems totally ridiculous to suggest that her advice, and the advice of the other experts, is only relevant to the Irish. The quote from the book saying 'this is a nice little book, we mustn't waste it', was referring to the fact that the book was designed to be used as a writer's journal as well, with blank pages interspersed throughout for your thoughts and ideas, not for shopping lists and doodles. There is also an excellent short story by Maeve Binchy at the end of the book, entitled 'The Writing Class'. If you're looking for motivation to write, buy this book and place it on your bookshelf right next to 'On Writing' and your dictionary/thesaurus reference book because it's a book that you will be coming back to again and again - I can't give it much higher praise than that.
not worth buying July 20, 2008 Hierophant (uk) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
If you are just starting to write and have never read a reference/how to book then maybe Binchy's book could be useful to you. Otherwise there are many better ones around. I have borrowed this from my library too and I am glad I haven't bought it.
terrible June 20, 2008 kermit 333 (England UK) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have to agree with the other two reviewers of this book - I expected much more from this popular author. I found it unpleasantly patronising "this is a nice little book.We mustn't waste it." And "there are some pieces of my own, deeply wise advice scattered about" Nothing like blowing your own trumpet ! And both of the above examples are only from page 3!!! In addition 90% of the advice was only useful if you happened to be living in Ireland; most of the "expert advice" was also from her fellow countrymen/women. I was also fascinated that although there were chapters on mens fiction, murder mysteries .writing for the stage writing for children and writing comedy there was nothing about Maeve's own writing. Maybe she wants to keep her secrets to herself ! I am glad that I borrowed this from the library before I spent good money on it ! And 10.99 for a book of only 160 odd pages seems to be vastly overpriced ! Don't waste your cash!!!
A Far Cry June 4, 2008 reader from Buckinghamshire 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
What a disappointing read, a far cry from what I was expecting from such an established author. I was hoping to be inspired and amused but was left still wanting by the end of this book. I found Wannabe A Writer? by Jane Wenham-Jones far more inspiring and entertaining!!
Disappointing June 2, 2008 Lala B (Ireland) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Thought this would be useful.....however it is very disappointing (despite a rave review in the Times which made me buy this! There are far better books/websites out there.........spend your money on something else!!
