An interesting, if somewhat far-fetched, storyline which sometimes seems to nod towards the Exorcist prequel movie. Good evocation of time and place, you get a real feeling for pre-war Breslau sweltering in the summer heat as the Nazis slowly come to power and everything starts to change. A certain suspension of disbelief is required but this is often the case with crime novels.
However, I find that the translation poses some problems. Although the translator appears to be a native English-speaker there are quite often problems with the use of tenses with the translator following Slavic rather than English practice. Some sentences are ambiguous but as I don't speak Polish I have no idea whether this is intentional or not. Bad marks to all concerned for not knowing that the author of Works and Days is called Hesiod in English.
These are perhaps minor points but in such an esoteric story they rather spoilt the book for me.

this book held my attention from page one, taut and compelling. very much anovel to compare with phillip kerr and bernie gunter,somewhat more graphic when observing the scenes of torture, but did add up to realistic view of the period. the story held together very well and held my attention untill the end.
