ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS January 7, 2009 Penelope Simpson (dorset, england) Absolutely fabulous Mr. Fellowes! The only question I have to ask is what took you so long? I adored Snobs but understood why it wasn't perhaps everybody's cup of tea, but this is wonderful. Fantastic characterisation, great but sparing dialogue and vivid descriptions. Mr. Fellowes has a wonderful gift of insight. Bring them on!
counter-revolution and reformation December 1, 2008 Mr. C. G. Leggatt Julian Fellowes superbly rallies the troops once more to the side of England's endangered upper middle class. There's a defining paragraph early on where the author eloquently sets out his stall: "Today's young......generally reject our reminiscences about a golden age when the customer was always right, when AA men saluted the badge on your car and policemen touched their helmet in greeting. Thank heaven for the end of deference, they say, but deference is part of an ordered, certain world and, in retrospect at least, that can feel warming and even kind." A brilliant summation of an uncomfortable truth for today's fracturing "New Labour" society. The Sloane Rangers - let's call them that - ARE a cultural loss, as I have noted with my other Amazon reviews. The Credit Crunch vividly puts in focus the failings of the Yuppie "Essex Boys" who replaced them both at the levers of business and, more widely, as custodians of Britain's social values. Mr Fellowes should, of course, be Sir Julian after his Oscar - but he's not a football manager. PAST IMPERFECT is an engaging chronicle of passion and class, contextualized and grippingly carried forward by the author's social insights. For his next book, could I urge humour? Grazing with Nancy Mitford, Evelyn Waugh, P.G. Wodehouse and Mary Dunn? I tried myself but, despite being taken up by a Literary Agent, was told there was no market for such stuff. There surely would be if penned by Julian Fellowes's brilliant hand.
Evocative, witty and sad December 1, 2008 Bluebell (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I really enjoyed this book. It evokes a world, that few of us have experienced, of aristocratic families and the social gatherings that underpinned the marriage-market of debutantes coming-out into 'Society'. It starts in the 1960s when this world was also changing and follows the lives of a group of bright young things who met at these gatherings. As with his Gosford Park, Julian Fellowes gently satirizes the foibles, petty snobberies and unearned privileges of this world. However the book is far more than this as there is a strong central story of a dying man's quest to find a son he didn't know he'd fathered until decades later and through this search the often sad and disappointing life stories of the central characters unfold and greatly enrich the book.

As a voracious reader-but not a great number of novels-one of the few to pitch into competition with those of the great 1750-1920 period.
A Fantastic Read November 23, 2008 Linda Wiltshire (England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I could not recommend this book more highly it is wonderfully written and a really interesting observation of how things have changed since the sixties. A great leap forward from Snobs. Mr Fellowes please do not make it so long until your next book
