Not Bad, But Lost Its Way A Bit! October 23, 2008 J.Flood (Dublin,Ireland) In the Red Dahlia, the body of a young woman is found on the banks of the River Thames. She has been brutally murdered, and the manner of her death has many similiarities to the famous 'Black Dahlia' murder case of the 1940s, that was never solved. It is up to this book's main protagonists, Detective Inspector Anna Travis, and her boss Detective Chief Inspector, James Langton to try and solve this one. I found this book a riveting read for the first couple of hundred pages, as the police are frantically trying to find a suspect, and promising leads are turning into nothing. However, once they finally target a suspect/suspects, I found the pace of the novel slowed down considerably, and the writing was not as compelling, as earlier. Travis' infatuation with her boss started to get on my nerves a bit too. Overall, though, not a bad read, but could have been pruned down by about fifty pages or more.
Disappointing October 4, 2008 J. Curd (Bedfordshire, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Well, another reviewer was wondering whether LLP could write as well on paper as she can for the small screen. In my opinion, the answer is a resounding no. The writing is bland, more like a screenplay than a novel. There is little to no tension and the main protagonists seem weakly characterized. There is a bloody plot, as one might expect, but there is little or no detection. Summary: girl hideously killed, no evidence so police clueless, eventual phone tip-off, more ineffective running around, case over. What took nearly 500 pages?
not a bad read August 25, 2008 Mrs. E. S. Powiecki i agree with a previous reviewer, that it is wise to read above suspision before reading this, as they are the same charactors. Although i have read the previous book it was a long time ago, so the author should have written the follow up a bit sooner, so you could remember the history between the two main charactors. On the whole an enjoyable read and a good creative storyline, as with all her books, so avid readers of la plante wont be disappointed.
Very VERY Good! March 17, 2008 A. Bridge (leicestershire) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got this book free with a magazine. I hardly ever read fiction as I get bored with it. However I picked this up (out of boredom believe it or not) and read the first page and was completely hooked! I couldn't put it down, and kept turning page after page....the toast is burning - I will just finish this page first....the bath is overflowing - I will just read to the end of this chapter....the dog needs to go out NOW - I'll just find out what happens in the cellar....you get the picture. I will deffo be reading some more of her stuff. I like the fact that it isn't so much a whodunnit? (you know quite early on) but is more of a howdunnit? Glad I have found an author who can keep me occupied on many a mundate flight.
New La Plante Fan March 13, 2008 Mooney (Norfolk UK) This book came free with a magazine otherwise I probably would never have chosen this type of book but I was completely mesmorised. It kept me interested from start to finish. An unputdownable read. Thoroughly recomended.
