Say Goodbye - Lisa Gardner December 7, 2008 S. Lloyd (Norfolk, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a thriller that stays in your mind long after you have finished reading it. The subject matter is very disturbing - child abduction, sexual, physical and mental abuse and a serial killer. Gardner states she was inspired by real events and she has certainly conveyed the cruelty that can exist and how evil actions of some take place and the consequences of them. In contrast she gives us hope and reminds us of good actions and bravery through the character of Rita. The use of spiders gives a creepy edge to the thriller and the imagery cleverly describes how others have been caught in the killer's web. This is well written, with a good moving plot and with the character of Kimberly Quincy remaining a strong believable one as we see her life changing.
I was 'ensnared'!! September 17, 2008 Louise Saunders (Isle of Skye) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I cannot believe that somebody actually gave a 1 star rating to this book! I am at the age where, if a book doesn't grab me by page 3, I dump it - life's too short to wade through faff. I've just finished Ms Gardner's latest book, and I was sorry to 'Say Goodbye' to it. I have been on the edge of my mattress (I read in bed!) every night for the past 3 nights turning pages at such a rate my husband complained of the draught. If the one or two poor ratings have deterred you so far from plunging in and buying this book then hesitate no more and buy it. It's been ages since I was so captivated by a story. Now what am I gonna do for a good read?
A disturbing web but good read September 15, 2008 Clive 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The most disturbing novel from Gardner dealing with gruesome issues of abduction and child abuse in quite horrific circumstances. In her post script Gardner worryingly claims these issues are based on real life. Kimberley Quincy is led to cases of missing girls and receives stange calls from adolescent boys for their rescue as she becomes involved in a case that is just emerging. At the same time she is heavily pregnant thinking about children, and family security. This is a good read, but at times a little hard to follow as the first person prose changes over generations and individuals. I had to read back a couple of times. Good but not her best.
catering to the masses September 1, 2008 Michael Watson (Elland, England) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Generally speaking, I like Lisa Gardner's books. This one is no exception: but, it's not that brilliant, frankly. She seems to have moved her storyline into the vein of Reichs etc., which doesn't make for an easy read. Okay, if you don't like spiders, then this book won't change your mind but in and amongst the sadism of the killer(s), I didn't quite see where the horror came from? Maybe I've been around too long to be worried about arachnids or just maybe, they hardly pose a threat in this story. I've noticed, too, that lately it seems de riguer with American authors to be all mumsy whilst carrying out a tough job. Okay, PC but I don't like my feisty females to be PC. What's the point? I'll certainly pick up the next one from Ms Gardner but I'm not holding my breath that I shall be riveted with the storyline, based on this book - which is a pity 'cos before, I used to be.
Boring August 30, 2008 Book Worm (West Midlands, UK) 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
This has to be one of the worst books I have ever read, and I've read a few! Couldn't wait to finish it. This author can do better and has done in the past. If I have to read once more of Kimberley 'chewing her bottom lip' again I'll scream and to make it worse Rachel started doing it towards the end of the book. Yawn.
