I got this book in the hope I could pick up basic chinese. I had looked at a lot of other phrasebooks/language courses for this across the web and found this one and since it was fairly cheap I bought it to try it out. This is possibly the best book for mandarin chinese I have ever owned and furthermore for people who have absolutely NO knowledge of the chinese language, like I did, this is the perfect book as it takes you from the very basics and you learn at your own pace. However, this is not a phrase book but tbh that's not really what I bought it for. I would recommend anyone who would like to learn Chinese for 'funsies' or for the hope of fluently speaking it in the future- much like myself.

cd must be used to benefit from learning chinese.starts with simple phrases eg. hello,how are you. starts introducing sentences and male/female voices on the cd help with pronounciation.need to listen and practise it aloud.ask a friend who speaks chinese to practise or say hello to someone who is chinese perhaps the local takeaway/places of work etc....confidence will grow rapidly .suitable for 10yrs to adults.enjoyable to read and do.

Mandarin is almost unapproachable for a westerner - this book isn't!
It's childishly simple and although it doesn't teach you very much, it leaves you able to greet, goodbye, count and have a very basic introduction to the language.
Its fun and very cheap. Buy it even if you are remotely interested!

As with the review title this does exactly what it says. I do think it might have been a tad more useful for traditional Chinese though but good enough as it does say Mandarin not Cantonese or Taiwanese!

I'm not a chinese teacher, in fact I'm not even so good at chinese, yet. But I wanted to learn by myself, and so my experience is from the two different books I bought. This one and 'Learn Chinese - Fast and Fun Way (Barron's Fast and Fun Way Language Series) by L. Ji' which I also bought.
Selecting between these two I definetly find myself not using this one so often. It's nice pictures, simple pages and all, but honestly I find it way too simplistic if you really want to learn how to create your own sentences.
