Amazon.co.uk Review Just when it seems that there cannot possibly be another twist to the Harry Potter tale, Stephen Fry dons his haughtiest and naughtiest tones to bring Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone to vibrant life on audio. Harry Potter has spent the first 10 years of his life at the mercy of the dreadful Dursleys--the aunt, uncle and fat, spoilt brat of a cousin who reluctantly gave him a home after the death of his mother and father. But on his 11th birthday Harry discovers that he is no ordinary boy, and despite the best efforts of his hideous relatives he escapes to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to begin his new life as a trainee wizard. And the rest, as they say, is history... As Harry battles against the evils thrown in his path, Stephen Fry injects the proceedings with a wry, dry and extremely contagious humour that perfectly suits the tale, wringing out the best in Harry and his cohorts as they get to grips with their new lives at the sharp end of Hogwarts. Fry's innate upper-class drone is perfectly suited to the telling of this most magical tale, cracking into the high-pitched squawking of Hermione the swat, or the gentle tones of the firm but fair Dumbledore, or the evil sniping of slimey Snape at precisely the right moments. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is a fine story and much has been written about its success but until you have heard Fry's cracking reading of this most magical of stories then you simply haven't lived. As with any audio book, this one is perfect for car journeys and an ideal way of introducing reluctant readers to the magic that is Harry Potter. (Ages 9 and over) --Susan Harrison
Amazon.co.uk Review Say you've spent the first 10 years of your life sleeping under the stairs of a family who loathes you. Then, in an absurd, magical twist of fate you find yourself surrounded by wizards, a caged snowy owl, a phoenix-feather wand and jellybeans that come in every flavour, including strawberry, curry, grass and sardine. Not only that, but you discover that you are a wizard yourself! This is exactly what happens to young Harry Potter in J K Rowling's enchanting, funny debut novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. In the non-magical human world--the world of "Muggles"--Harry is a nobody, treated like dirt by the aunt and uncle who begrudgingly inherited him when his parents were killed by the evil Voldemort. But in the world of wizards, small, skinny Harry is renowned as a survivor of the wizard who tried to kill him. He is left only with a lightning-bolt scar on his forehead, curiously refined sensibilities and a host of mysterious powers to remind him that he's quite, yes, altogether different from his aunt, uncle, and spoilt, pig-like cousin Dudley. A mysterious letter, delivered by the friendly giant Hagrid, wrenches Harry from his dreary, Muggle-ridden existence: "We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry". Of course, Uncle Vernon yells most unpleasantly, "I AM NOT PAYING FOR SOME CRACKPOT OLD FOOL TO TEACH HIM MAGIC TRICKS!" Soon enough, however, Harry finds himself at Hogwarts with his owl Hedwig ... and that's where the real adventure--humorous, haunting, and suspenseful--begins. This magical, gripping, brilliant book--a future classic to be sure--will leave children clamouring for a sequel. (Ages 8-13) --Karin Snelson

Stephen Fry and Harry Potter September 1, 2010 G. Bockus (Wilburton, OK USA) I have read so much hype about the differences between the Stephen Fry and the Jim Dale Audio Books that I had to listen for myself. I guess it all depends upon who you hear first. Mr Fry does an excellent job reading and presenting the book, but I feel that Mr Dale does a better job of putting across the different characters. I will buy another Fry audio book to further test my opinion, but for now Jim Dale is my choice.
Wonderful to listen to August 29, 2010 S. Martiny (Denmark) It is constant joy to listen to Stephen Fry as he reads the wonderful humor in Philosopher's Stone. My English-learning daughter, 12 years old, who has been reading the local, translated version of the book several times loves to listen as much as myself, and she has been rushing through the 7 DVDs. We have now acquired the printed English version, too, so we can read and listen to Fry's impressive tone.
Ellie aged 8 loved this! August 22, 2010 ceb 123 (UK) Ellie age 8 says:
I liked it when Harry went to Hogwarts school and they where having a flying lesson on the 3rd day.And one of Harrys friends have recicved a ball from his Grandmother, and that boy had just broken his wrist and the teacher had told them to stay on the floor and the boy had droped the ball on the floor, and Harrys enmy Draco Malfoy really liked the ball so he grabbed it and flew up into the air. So Harry flew up into the air and caught the ball and went to the ground then Professer Mcgonagal came out and took Harry indoors and everyone thought he was in trouble but she had been watching Harry and they do a sport called Quiditch and you have to get a ball throgh a hoop and one person has to catch a tiny fast golden ball and that person is called a seeker and Profeser Mcgonagal had come to tell Harry that if he would like to he could be a seeker. At Hogwarts all of the children have to be split into four houses. They are called Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Harry is in Gryfndor and Draco Malfoy is in Slytherin. Hope you enjoy the book like I did!
Fry gives the book a new life August 9, 2010 Fatma I read the HP books about three years ago and loved them so much that I've been wanting to read them again since then. Unfortunately, I never got the time to do it. However, this summer I found this audiobook version and started listening to it during my daily walks.
Stephen Fry really gives the book a new life. I've never heard someone do so many different voices so well. Moreover, he puts so much emotion in his reading, you feel the anger, the joy, the dissapointment, etc. I usually walk for a max. of 50 minutes aday, but listening to Fry I always end up walking for up to two hours without noticing how much time has gone.
I only hope that he would read more books, because just thinking about how boring walking would become after I finish listening to all his audiobooks makes me sad.
