Excellent August 26, 2009 Welsh Lady (North Wales) Easy to read, novel is a timeless story, Leo Tolstoy a master at storytelling, a classic to keep an read over and over.
Anna Karenina April 18, 2009 Nonie Baker (Moycullen, Ireland) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
In Russia during the 1800s, society and social status were no less important than they are now, so when Anna Karenina falls for Alexei Vronsky (who is courting Kitty Shcherbatsky), despite being happily married with a beloved son, gossip spreads. And it doesn't help that around the time of falling in love with Vronsky Anna was actually trying to cheer up her sister-in-law Dolly over an affair Dolly's chasmaristic husband (and Anna's brother) Stepan Oblonsky had with the family's former French governess.
There's also Levin, a man hurt over Kitty's rejection over his proposal to her and is confused about the meaning of life.
This may sound like a mediocre novel to some at first, but believe me, it's anything but. You'll soon get wrapped up in the brilliant story!
one of the best September 19, 2008 K. Lennox (UK/Paris) One of the few books where you forget you are actually reading a book. The story draws you in so well that it is almost impossible to put the book down.
The characters are very honestly portrayed - there is no one 'perfect' character who carries the greater moral good throughout the book. As such, it is a very accurate portrayal of humanity.
If one re-reads this book, one will very much be rewarded by their efforts. The characters seem to be different upon a second read - I was very much a fan of Levin until his marriage, but after the marriage, I was, for some reason, disappointed with his rather weak character, and was drawn to Vronsky (who initially repelled me). On the second read, I had a greater understanding of Vronsky's character, and sympathised with him more from the onset.
That is one of Tolstoy's many strengths - he understands that morality is, at times, subjective, and what can be seen as the greater good can depend on viewpoint.
Also - a great translation. Thoroughly recommended.
Is not tragic. Is not thoughtful or profound. The characters are too unconvincing. August 29, 2008 Mr. Edmund A. Bloxam 1 out of 10 found this review helpful
Absolutely pointless. The tragedy of oppressive Russian society is succintly discussed in about a page somewhere near the beginning, then we have to wait ages for her to kill herself, which she does not because of the above, but because she thinks her bloke is shagging some other bird.
In the meantime, we flounder around in 19th agricultural theory, an uneventful election, some whining...
Why is Levin even in the book, and far too much of it? We are told in highly descriptive pages of how much he and his wife love each other, and he just stresses. He then flakes out at the end.
And I don't think his revelation is at all profound. His path there is to erratic and uneventful. His belief is a compromise.
It would be tragic if the characters weren't so idiotic.
Hype or Hope? July 2, 2008 B. Clover (LONDON United Kingdom) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
The translations of Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky have been much praised for making the Russian masters more accessible. I'm afraid I find this one often strained and dull. Opening 'Anna' at random I read this: 'After seeing her guests off, Anna began pacing up and down the room without sitting down' (page 704). Apart from the clunky 'down, down', could Anna really have paced her room standing up?
