Tolstoy-to die for. August 11, 2010 P Alderman It's not necessarily what he says, but how he says it, that makes Tolstoy, in my opinion, to die for. Yes, there are huge parts of this book which go on and on about agriculture, and I guessed from the start what would become of Anna, but still found Tolstoy's pace in describing human thoughts, feelings, and affairs page turning...and if you need romance, then this book has bundles of it. What it is not, is, it is not a contemporary quick read, it is a 19th century Russian read, and hence the size and sheer detail in description; the reader needs to appreciate the time and place in which the book was written, and not expect it to compare to more contemporary styles of writing. This book comes in as one of my top favourite reads, it's not mind blowing, and it's not going to change the world, but it is written simply, beautifully and intelligently.
An unrewarding classic March 29, 2010 alicia thurlow (UK) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
I am an avid reader of 'classic' books and I am hungrily working my way through all of those must-read-before-you-die works of literature. I thought War and Peace would be a good one to add to my list, but a little daunted by this, I decided to try Anna Karenina as an introduction to Tolstoy.
Unfortunately, I was disappointed. I quite liked the interchangeable Russian names and the constant need to think and recollect as each character was referred to throughout the book - it's certainly a good read late at night when you need help dropping off to sleep! But the book inspired no interest in Russian high society, politics or farming - which made it a hard slog as so many pages were unrewardingly devoted to this. I developed some sympathy for Levin, until the final few chapters when I really just felt that he ought to 'get a grip' and stop being so ludicrously self-involved!
Kitty and Dolly are likeable characters which redeems the book in places, but Anna herself is incomprehensible to me. I am a mother myself and I could find no sympathy for her; particularly in her attitude to her children. It made difficult reading and I believe that Anna could have improved her situation by being less selfish. She missed Seryosza, but only from her own point of view - there was no suggestion that she was concerned about his state of mind or welfare.
I was slightly annoyed to read a review which said that Tolstoy truly understood women, because he wrote Anna Karenina. I do not agree!
Having said this, it is worth reading if only just for the achievement of finishing. Some people love it.
masterpiece March 16, 2010 Ben Simons quite possibly the best novel i have ever read . the way tolstoy describes the atmosphere and develops the characters is spellbinding . i couldnt put it down . ienjoye war and piece but found it rather tedious towards the end but after this shall be reading more of his works . thoroughly recommended!
Excellent August 26, 2009 Welsh Lady (North Wales) Easy to read, novel is a timeless story, Leo Tolstoy a master at storytelling, a classic to keep an read over and over.
Anna Karenina April 18, 2009 Nonie Baker (Moycullen, Ireland) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
In Russia during the 1800s, society and social status were no less important than they are now, so when Anna Karenina falls for Alexei Vronsky (who is courting Kitty Shcherbatsky), despite being happily married with a beloved son, gossip spreads. And it doesn't help that around the time of falling in love with Vronsky Anna was actually trying to cheer up her sister-in-law Dolly over an affair Dolly's chasmaristic husband (and Anna's brother) Stepan Oblonsky had with the family's former French governess.
There's also Levin, a man hurt over Kitty's rejection over his proposal to her and is confused about the meaning of life.
This may sound like a mediocre novel to some at first, but believe me, it's anything but. You'll soon get wrapped up in the brilliant story!
