Masterpiece; Brilliantly Translated February 4, 2010 Ann-Marie LeBlanc (Strassen, Luxebourg) I read War and Peace many years ago but with a different translator. This version is far superior as it stays true to Tolstoy's origional text as closely as possible. This is a great book for serious readers and book clubs. It is as much a philosophy book as it is a story of Russian high society and the Napoleonic war. Tolstoy's insights into life and human nature are profound. Highly recommended.

Use of footnotes for frequent translations of French makes reading difficult and tedious. Not an exciting translation from the Russian.
Warsome Peace of work December 20, 2009 Ste to the J (Mansfield England) At 1440 pages, War and Peace may seem a daunting size, yet the book isn't a difficult read, unlike Crime and Punishment, War and Peace(or at least this translation) dispenses with the Patronyms and multiple characters of the same name that were prevelant in the aforementioned title and leaves you free to explore the characters lives and emotions.
Humanity and existentialist issues are tackled against a back drop of war with Napoleon and the French. War scenes are juxtaposed with the frivolity of Russian high society, leading characters to question their choices in life and their world views.
Despite a large ensemble of characters, Tolstoy introduces them all steadily avoiding confusion. Certain passages are beautifully written and will stay in my mind until i get senile.
Critics claim this book is a masterpiece and it's hard to disagree. War and Peace is life in all it's glory and depravity, where even the mundane can be monumental if seen in a certain way.
Absolutely Brilliant Masterpiece December 16, 2009 Rotimi Akano-williams I started this book about two years in a start and stop version, in between I have read over 30 books, including Anna Kerinina, some Dostoyevsky, Zola and Manuel Garcia. Finally I made up my mind to finish War and Peace, it was a decision well made because am not looking forward to finish it, i don't want the story to end, I don't want to read any other book, I just want to continue to be enthralled and entertained by this phenomenon of an epic story. Every night before going to sleep I run through in my head all the pages and characters I read in day, reliving each events, activities and incidents meticulously. If you love and enjoy reading excellent books, your experience is not complete without reading this book. It might be a bit daunting and heavy at the beginning, but please persevere as the reward is out of this world. If Tolstoy was alive when the Nobel price was introduced, I strongly believed he should be awarded 4 Nobel prices in literature for every section of the book. I don't know what else to say, than I am still spellbound!!!
A Real Page Turner! November 30, 2009 David Lusher (London England)
As soon as I had finished it I just had to begin reading it all over again. Highly recommended!
