Laugh out Loud July 6, 2010 P Skyrme I found this a most enjoyable book, partly for the nostalgic memories of the 50s and for the humour which had me laughing out loud.
thunderbolt kid July 4, 2010 sweetpea typical bill bryson humour excellent easy read full of interesting quips and takes you back to the days of when children were allowed to be children very much a book that most people of a certain generation can relate to and those of other generations to share in.
BRYSON BELOW PAR June 26, 2010 L. Andrews This book I place below his travel books but above his language/science books. So, therefore, for me I give it 3 stars. The book is an ok read life in the 50s in the states was quite interesting what with the threat of communism and the wealth of post war America. However as Bryson admits in his introduction his childhood was largely uneventful and some of his childhood stories to me seemed as if they were slightly exaggerated to try to enliven the book somewhat. That said the book overall was worth the read it still has Bryson's unique easy read style which I love.Lets hope his next book has a bit more punch than this one.
Wickedly funny! June 23, 2010 NL Winstone (United Kingdom) This book tells the story of Bryson's childhood growing up in America. Laugh out loud in Bryson's typical style but also brilliantly informative. A very enjoyable light-hearted read.
I like most of Bryson, and this did it for me... May 17, 2010 MAP (Lancashire, England) As with the Garrison Keillor book I just read in the States, this too was an enjoyable read whilst over there.
Gentle humour, descriptive writing, makes you think back to those times - where was I and what were my perceptions of the time - but nothing too challenging.
I can truly imagine what Des Moines was like, and where America was going, in the 50s.
