| Customer Reviews: Did not do what it said on the cover August 14, 2009 Sincerely searching (Berkshire) 5 out of 13 found this review helpful
I bought this book to get the other side of the argument from the very readable Richard Dawkins book, "The God delusion". Having been brought up a Christian I was not unhappy to have my faith challenged by reading his book and needless to say, I have not become an atheist after reading it.I can see his argument but I choose to believe in God. What Richard Dawkins book opened my eyes to was the similarities between religions-a super power and an ethical code to live by. Christians seem to think they are the only ones with "the Truth" and are scathing of other relgions and atheists, so I wanted to test that out. I wanted to see the proof that the Bible was "the ONLY book" with the truth. What a waste of time and money. Not only was the book very stodgy to read and academic, I was initially put off by the inference that atheists are idiots."Village idiots...er...atheists" I cannot stand this arrogance amongst Christians toward fellow human beings with a different point of view. The waste of time was confirmed when I got so bored that I cut to the chase to the section entitled "the bottom line for faith"-this section concluded that you can't prove anything and people come to faith through experiencing the Christian church/individual Christians, and deciding that what Jesus did "fits" their experience of the world. So there you have it. No more convincing a case than for any other religion. I have now left the Christian church and am looking into the Unitarian church which welcomes all religions, much more appealing and broad, and of course much less arrogant.
Atheists Beware; this book reveals your agenda... July 18, 2008 GRH "Ex WHA Jet" (British Columbia) 11 out of 33 found this review helpful
This book shoud be required reading, for both Christians, to remind them why we're RIGHT, and for Atheists, to let them know they're way out in LEFT FIELD, pun intended. Christianity offers hope, because God values each individual. Atheism offers only despair; nothing matters because people are only a mistake of biology, just a random result of evolution.
The premise of the book can be summed up as follows:
The Atheist needs a belief system that states that human beings are only animals; that way, the Atheist can behave like an animal. After all, evolution teaches that only the dominant deserve to survive, so go ahead and do whatever pleases and benefits oneself, all others be damned.
Fortunately, we all have the ability to make our own decisions. If Christianity isn't true, then it does not matter. If it is true, then it is the ONLY THING THAT MATTERS.
Very interesting read January 6, 2008 Don Pelayo (Asturias) 28 out of 36 found this review helpful
The Bible is the most mis-quoted book in the world by Religious fanatics.
However most people who quote it show a serious lack of knowledge about the Bible as they interpret it outside its original context.
This book written by Robert Hutchinson ( someone who has actually read the whole Bible and spent years studying it ) helps to explore the biggest myths surrounding it.
The book helps to interpret the Bible in its right context and explain the meaning of several words which are often misquoted ( to know can mean to have sex with or make acquaintance).
The chapters on the archaeological discoveries , Sodom and slavery are particularly interesting and relevant.
I was most impressed with this book and will recommend it anyone interested in the Bible.
