Product Description
When the wife of one of the masters is found bludgeoned to death, George Smiley, out of loyalty to an old friend, agrees to look into the case. But his investigation raises a multitude of questions. Who could have hated Stella Rode enough to kill her? Why was her dog put down shortly before the murder?

Didn't last long enough, but a brilliant adaptation. Simon Russell Beale doesn't quite conjure up the supressed power and menace of Alec Guiness as Smiley, but avery enjoyable tale.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit that while I have read and enjoyed other Le Carre books this was my first proper encounter with George Smiley; based on this initial outing I look forward with real enthusiasm to the remainder of the books as they are dramatised by the BBC.

I listen to a great number of audiobooks and great readers can really bring a good book to life but you can't beat a radio dramatisation and outside of one or two smaller American publishers this is a field which the BBC has really made its own. The quality of the special effects and sound quality generally has improved hugely over the years and a production such as this makes previous landmark series of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit seem terribly dated by comparison. Overall the cast may be less well known than were involved in various Dickens dramatisations but Simon Russell Beale makes a believable and sympathetic Smiley while the supporting cast provide the necessary contrast and depth. The story is not a sophisticated one but feels like a good introduction to character and his milieu. A very enjoyable and indeed enthralling listen

5 out of 5 stars Quality radio drama at it's best   July 23, 2009

This BBC radio production of the John Le Carre story, is quite simply excellent. Although the story was one of the author's earlier works, it has been successfully dramatised into an entertaining drama. Simon Russell Beale is magnificent in his portrayal of George Smiley. The plot may be simple enough, when Smiley is persuaded to investigate the murder of the wife of a public school lecturer. However, there is an understated menace to the story, as the mystery deepens and another murder takes place. The relentless Smiley patiently unravels the pieces. A joy!
