| Customer Reviews: How many times have I played this: "many, many, many times" June 30, 2010 J. HAGGER (Clacton, England) I decides to build up a collection of some of the older radio programmes, for nostalgic reasons I suppose. It is true that as someone else has stated most of the items on this and its companion discs have been released before, but if you, like me, wish to build up a representative collection these 'Very best of' discs are a good way to do it. I now have several examples of radio humour of all kinds downloaded on my ipod which gives me a sort of personal 'radio station'.
Anyway, what can one say about this and it's companion discs. Radio humour is 'in the ear of the beholder' but for my money Kenneth Horne and the gang along with the writing of Barry Took and Marty Fieldman take some beating, if you are 'on the same wave length as theirs'. I love catch phrase humour though I expect it is out of date these days. If you, like me, can remember Sunday dinner times in the late 60's you will enjoy being taken back in time with the likes of Charles and Fiona, Rambling Sid Rumpo and Julian and Sandy.
Bye the way, wher did the punch lines 'How long have you been hear for?' : '35 years' originate from- I thought, incorrectly, that it was this series.
One final point, which I hope may interest you, I once read Kenneth Hornes' biography. He was really a buisinessman. I seem to remember he was a director with the Pilciton Glass Company (or similar!) and this radio work was really a sort of hobby for him.
Round the Horne CD review January 14, 2010 John P. Vickers (Essex, UK) If you are old enough to have listened to the original radio shows then this series of CDs is a must. To allow old and new listeners the chance to sit round the 'wireless' (well CD player actually) and re-live your youth or hear what you missed.
Having only heard the occasional re-run (when played as a snippet on some other show) or caught the occasional edition that was the updated series run on Radio 4; I was then lucky enough to see the radio programme re-created on stage which did admirable justice to the original series and was brilliantly funny in its own right.
This set of CDs were bought for my father-in-law as a Christmas present, (it was him I took to the play and who confirmed its authenticity), they have already been repeatedly played and brought back many happy memories and new laughs to all who have listened to them."Round the Horne": v. 3: The Very Best Episodes (BBC Radio Collection)
BBC butchers May 27, 2008 giddygoddy (Swaziland) 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
Don't ever buy a BBC disc called "The Best of .....", never mind "The Very Best of". They are not so much edited as butchered. It seems they have a clapometer or laughometer and then extract some of the previous bits for our delight. The point is that in "Have I got News for You", or "Round the Horne", etc. there is a rhythm within the episode as well as across episodes, which is where much of the comedy lies. That remains on the butchers' floor. Then there is the careless, bordering on disgraceful, presentation of the series, from the boxes to the documentation. The BBC could make a big thing of this, to allay their licence fee, but it seems they can't be bothered, leaving it all to ignorant amatuers. Amateurs? No, amateurs would enjoy the work and involve themseves in it.
