| Customer Reviews: Triceratops-tastic! March 9, 2009 Barney McGrew (UK) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Narrated by British stage and TV stalwart Martin Jarvis, who appeared as the sadistic `Butler' in the 1970 television story, this Doctor Who adventure featuring the Third incarnation of the Timelord and his travelling companion Jo Grant sees London evacuated as Tyrannosaurus', Diplodocus', pterodactyls and other long-extinct creatures begin appearing randomly on the streets of the capital. The Doctor soon discovers a sinister plot - Operation Golden age - has been initiated by missing scientist Whitaker and his nasty henchman Butler, in order to return the planet to its pre-civilised state and thereby avoid Earth becoming the polluted mess they now believe it to be. The Timelord teams up with his old friends from UNIT and together they attempt to thwart this nefarious plan and avoid the destruction of the entire human race...
Jarvis' silky tones are ideally suited to audio and the story comes to life even more than it did in the excellent Target novelisation. The detail that was cut from the novel is all returned here and fleshes-out what was already a great story.
"The important thing is to keep an open mind." January 29, 2008 Hector Lerbioz (London) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
An unabridged reading of Malcolm Hulke's 1976 novelisation of his own DR WHO script,INVASION OF THE DINOSAURS, broadcast two years earlier; this set of CD's is a Brontosaurus-sized treat. Much as I enjoy the televised story starring Jon Pertwee's Doctor(appalling special effects notwithstanding) this is unquestionably the superior version.
Malcolm Hulke's WHO novelisations from the mid to late 1970's are all worth a read in that they are not only entertaining and intelligent adventure yarns but also flesh out the thoughts and motivations of the characters. I remember being very disappointed on first seeing a VHS copy of 1971's COLONY IN SPACE a few years ago. The novelised version, THE DOOMSDAY WEAPON, which I'd read years before was full of 3-dimensional people with quite detailed back stories and fascinating motivations. The TV story however, is sadly populated by mostly rather dull ciphers.
THE DINOSAUR INVASION's own TV counterpart isn't quite such a contrast in terms of its characterisations, but the book has the advantage of not having visibly unconvincing dinosaur models fringed in a yellow outline of cheap-looking Colour Separation Overlay. One's imagination is the only restriction to how spectacular or frightening the monsters are. Moreover, there are scenes and characters which are entirely unique to the book. The opening sequence in Chapter One, chronicling the rather melancholic last few days in the life of Glaswegian drunkard Shughie McPherson and his horrific end is wonderfully understated. It sets the tone perfectly for this slightly bizarre and ecologically right-on tale of an evacuated London infested with Prehistoric creatures. By the way, PRIMEVAL eat your heart out, DR WHO did your schtick first and the novelisation does it better!
This audio version also scores over buying an ordinary copy of the text because Martin Jarvis's reading is nothing short of magnificent. Here is an actor who is a master at bringing prose to life. Jarvis's vocal interpretations of all the book's characters are the best reason I can think of for buying. His own take on the Doctor sounds even more patronising and pompous than Mr Pertwee ever managed to be, but this is always entertaining and absolutely in keeping with the emphasis of the writing. His Brigadier is spot-on and Jarvis's reading of the interestingly motivated villains,(Professor Whitaker, Sir Charles Grover, General Finch etc) whilst sounding nothing like the actors who played the parts on TV, all managed to convince this listener.
The recording is enhanced by the occasional sound effect, and a splendidly cinematic sounding musical score which punctuates breaks in the narrative and quietly but effectively underscores the mood of certain passages.
Let's hope this isn't the last time that Jarvis is asked to read a DR WHO book. On the strength of this reading alone he has at least one diehard fan.
