Dreadful November 18, 2008 I vaguely recall enjoying one or two of Martinas' books way back when but I can't see me reading anymore..ever! I'm not even half way through this one and doubt if I'll finish it. If I see the word SKULDUGGERY one more time I'll scream! I know Ms Cole is supposed to know her stuff and has experience of London's underworld but does anyone actually ever use that word?? It's in all her novels (the ones I've read anyway) YUK. The first part of the book was confusing, I wasn't sure which Patrick was being referred to (junior or senior) I guess if you're a die hard Martina fan you'll enjoy this cliched SSDT (same story different title) but if you like more substance to both your plots and your characters this won't satisfy. If it wasn't for the violence etc.. I'd say it was written for teens. Luckily I only paid 50p for this at a hospice, I'd have been gutted had I paid anymore!
Disappointing October 20, 2008 Close What a disappointment. I have only recently been introduced to Martina Cole. The first one I read was The Jump which I just couldn't put down, the same for Dangerous Lady but Close is, like many other reviews focusing too much on how people are feeling instead of getting on with the story. I've not finished the book yet but I'm halfway through thinking at some point I'm going to be completely and utterly gripped but sadly, its not gonna happen and I'm gonna have to give this one up as a bad job. Its not put me off Martina's books but I'm going with what my friends have all said and that's to stick to reading her earlier books!
martina cole addict October 13, 2008 I am a martina cole addict. They are thick books and I am getting through them too fast as I want to know what happens to everyone. I have read almost all of them now and I enjoyed this one just as much as the others. My first was "The Know" and I loved it. My daughter doesnt read much, doesnt have time but she read it too and enjoyed it. I get involved with the characters and rate Ms Cole as one of the best authors I have read.I cant understand the readers who say they are similar. The characters come alive and it may just be that the backgrounds inevitably have similarities but the characters are very different. I never know how they will end. I have just finished one and am now scouring the pages here for another as soon as possible. I cried and laughed and held my breath at times and sighed at the end. What more can you ask for.
Pacey, Violent & Gripping........ September 7, 2008 I'm baffled by the harshness of so many of the reviews - I read this, much by chance, having no prior experience of the author and I really enjoyed it! Yes, it's hardly original, and it's cliched but the characters are good, the pacing is well, pacey and the settings and times are vividly portrayed. The story spans a number of years, and it does have a touch of the epic - Anyone that enjoys London Gangster fiction should get something out of this. It's very violent in parts, the author walking a tight line between graphic description and leaving the many acts of horrific torture & murder to the imagination. Parallels do exist to The Krays, and it was hard not to imagine scenes from that movie. All in all, a decent enough crime thriller/drama worth the price.
boring, a regurgitation of her other books July 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the fifth Martina Cole novel I have read, and where I enjoyed the first few, by the time i got to this one, I could predict the lines that were going to come out the characters. More than half of it feels like it has been written just to bulk out the book and meet the required number of pages. The theme is getting boring, although I realise that this is the Martina Cole style, but how many ways can you tell a story of London gangster families who love their mums/kids/women, swear too much, smoke endless fags etc etc? i think if this is the extent of Martina Cole's writing skills, her publishers should have left it at a 4 book deal.
