Product Description Cat, Duck and Squirrel live in an old white cabin, with a pumpkin patch in the garden. Every day Cat slices up some pumpkin, Squirrel stirs in some water and Duck tips in some salt to make the perfect pumpkin soup; until the day Duck wants to do the stirring.
Amazon.co.uk Review Three friends, Duck, Squirrel and Cat, join together every evening to make pumpkin soup. Each has their own very important part to play in the process and the soup is always delicious. Then, one day, Duck decides he wants to stir the soup instead of adding the salt. This leads to a tremendous quarrel which ends with Duck leaving in a huff. At first Squirrel and Cat are unconcerned by his absence, but as time goes by they start to worry about what might have happened to their friend. This is a witty, observant and highly original tale about the ups and downs of friendship by award-winning author-illustrator Helen Cooper. As in The Bear Under the Stairs and The Baby Who Wouldn't Go to Bed, Helen Cooper has created a magical picture book from a familiar childhood occurrence. --Philippa Reece

Wonderful! January 14, 2010 T. Chafer What a wonderful story and how great to have it so well read on audio CD, with lots of sound effects and music. The kids love it and it is great to put on for car journeys or a short story before bed. We find the kids can lose their concentration on some of the longer stories when on longer car journeys, usually because they're excited about where they're going, so this audio CD does a wonderful job of amusing them for a bit and breaking the monotony. The story is a wonderful tale of three friends and the book is beautifully illustrated and coloured, which the cover depicts perfectly.
Fantastic Book August 8, 2009 Mrs. J. Spence (UK) This is a great book, my 4 year old loves it. It has lovely illustrations and lots of colour and I think it's a good story to help explain sharing.
A definite must have.
Lovely Story about making Soup! August 5, 2009 A. Baker (Glasgow, UK) My three and half year old daughter loves this book, after getting it out of the library three times I decided I should just buy it for her. The illustrations are also very colourful. It's a nice amusing little story about a cat, a duck and a squirrel who all live happily together in their little white cabin and all have their duties to perform when making the pumpkin soup, then the harmony is disrupted when the duck wants to try a different task in the soup making!
Beautiful drawings, but... February 2, 2009 S. Smith (Scotland) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
When I read to my young children at night I find myself reaching for those books that I like. There are those which are my favourites; those which I avoid unless my daughter explicity asks for them; and then there are those that I'll only pick up if I've not read for sometime, just for variety.
This book falls in to the latter category. OK, it has a message of mutual compromise and trust, and the story is crafted expertly enough for my 4 year old to appreciate these messages; but it doesn't really engage either my daughter of myself. Additionally, some of the illustrations depict imaginary scenes, ones which don't actually occur in the story and a 4 year old finds this confusing. Its not a book we find ourselves reaching for often.
BUT - the illustrations are superb, beautifully detailed and works of art in their own right.
Warm and inviting... an excellent choice for young readers! December 23, 2008 G. Munday (London, UK) Themes for `Pumpkin Soup' revolve around teamwork and sharing. Illustrations are delicious, inviting and cosy - like your eyes are settling into a snug cottage in the late Autumn. The end of the book will excite and enthral youngsters (KS1 and early KS2). The book can be easily differentiated, from asking Low Attainers what animal did what to help make Pumpkin Soup, through to questioning why the Duck went away and what the Squirrel and Cat realised in his absence.
Children could also be posed questions such as "What makes the images seem cosy?" and unpacking the clear benefits of working together as a team.
