Fiction or a history lesson? December 18, 2008 Mr. Peter Steward (Norwich, England) There is no doubt that this book has literary merit. I just found it sad that it fizzled out towards the end and I wasn't sure whether the idea behind the novel and the story got overwhelmed by the author's wish to give us some kind of period history lesson. The story itself is divided into two distinct sections - set many years apart. It looks at the life and loves of naturalist/explorer Joseph Banks and also a modern day search for a model of an extinct bird. There is of course something more to the bird than meets the eye. Unfortunately all too often the author seems to lose his way as he tries to make the plot tenable and interesting. By the end I had pretty much lost interest in the actual bird. From a historical perspective the narrative is well drawn but ultimately there are few surprises or wow moments within the text. Overall it was a very good idea that has only partially worked.
The best book I've read for ages November 23, 2008 Helen (England) This is a wonderful book and I've been recommending it to so many people. It starts off with a fabulously titled first chapter and just gets better and better. The narrative is beautifully woven between two time frames, and the writer's style changes to suit the time as does the typeface. I adored both the modern day and the past-time stories. Emotionally intense, believable characters that I really cared about; wonderful finely-drawn descriptions... I LOVED this and plan on reading it again very soon. A keeper rather than a pass-it-on book.
the conjurors bird June 17, 2008 J. Riley (Preston, Lancs., England) I committed 2 grave sins of book buying with this one - (1) i bought it because i liked the cover, and, (2) because it was cheap. After a fairly slow start i really enjoyed it,(i would go as far as to say i couldn't put it down!) very original and a nice surprise for a bargain buy!!
Delightful read April 12, 2008 J. Chisholm (Nairn, Scotland) I have just read this book for the second time and am pleased to say that I enjoyed it just as much, if not possibly more, than the first time! Perhaps because the book is rooted in fact, the characters seemed all the more believable. This is a gentle read - no explosive fireworks - but gives an incredible insight into an age long gone and a love doomed from the start.
A Gripping Blend of Past and Present February 13, 2008 J. Chippindale (England) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Naturalist Joseph Banks became famous after voyaging with Captain Cook on his first voyage of discovery to the far side of the world. Banks had been fortunate to encounter many sights and sounds that no other Englishman had ever had the opportunity to see, but none of them had come close to capturing his imagination like the image of the elusive woman, a woman with the most striking green eyes, who haunted the woods close to his home. A couple of hundred years later a man stumbles on an old portrait of a young woman with alarmingly striking eyes, but who is she. John Fitzgerald the discoverer of the portrait, has lost too much, the brash assertiveness of his youth. The belief that one day he was bound to make a name for himself and the love of his life, Gabby. But an unexpected call from his lost love brings it all rushing back to him and also embroils him in a mystery that repels and fascinates him at one and the same time. Now he is in a desperate race to solve the puzzle of the Conjuror's Bird. And the woman in the portrait could provide the key.
