 Amusing yet Disturbing March 2, 2010

This book, about the problems two sisters have with their widowed father when he is "overcome" by a voluptuous Ukranian/Russian lady, 50 years his junior, is very funny but at the same time very disturbing. It is also a deep insight into family relationships, particularly since the two sisters have somewhat different experiences of dealing with the "world" around them.

I'm afraid I'm with the one star brigade having had this book suggested as a Book Club choice. This book had the potential to be a good yarn, but it was boring to the nth degree.
The characters were flat, dull and lacking dimension. The forays into the past did not spark interest and I was left wondering why they fizzled out. I was turning pages to see if I had missed something or perhaps pages were missing. I think the author was trying to be clever by weaving the history of tractors into the narrative, but she failed miserably. Ten seconds after struggling to the last page I forgot the characters altogether.
Everyone has critiqued this book far better than I but in the end my advice is to not waste time or money on this one.

I bought this book after reading great reviews, the 'extremely funny' 'outstanding' claims. And that it had been shortlised for the orange Prize. I found the story to be totally unbelieveable and far from comical or funny. The characters were weak and the main character very difficult to believe in. Far from the book that it claimed to be.

Where is the humour of which everyone speaks? This book was not the remotest bit funny, in fact it was pretty sad and tragic. The plot was repetative, the ending obvious and the dialogue flat. This book bimbled to a conclusion and the journey was very dull indeed. The digressions into the history of tractors were short and few - but not short and few enough.
This book is a load of nothing - it is not funny (although people claim it is), it is not a gripping and well told family saga and it is not a well told narrative.
Don't bother.

I absolutely loved this book, it is written in a style that not only makes it a very easy read for the reader but also makes you feel part of the family it is based around. I tried to approach this book with openly not really knowing anything about the plot and it managed to surprise me greatly in the simplicity of the plot and the quirkiness of the text. I have recommended this book to all i know and have only found one friend who did not enjoy it due to a different taste in humour. Very glad i read this book :D
