 An adorable picture book with unique illustrations February 28, 2008

My mother bought me this book as a Valentine's present and even though I'm nearly 21, I love Charlie and Lola. My sister recently received a dog so I chose this book because I absolutely adore dogs. The storyline is concise while Lauren Child's sketchy illustrations combined with realistic features give the book some added sophistication. I also like the activity pack and the three original Charlie and Lola books as well as the cartoon series on CBeebies.

I love Tomato/Not Sleepy/Too Small for School - but this book was a real disappointment: repetitive and lacking in charm (so much so that I instantly turned to the flyleaf to see what was going on). It has none of the wonderfully childlike quirkiness of the 'real' Charlie and Lola books. I will not be reading it again.

Having read "I am not sleepy and will not go to bed" and "I will not ever never eat a tomato" to my 4-year-old and us both having enjoyed them tremendously, I thought the idea of "But excuse me that is my book" sounded great. While the book looks great, just like the two older books, the story leaves much to be desired: it is down-right boring. My son's interest in the story has disappeared before we reach the half-way mark.
In the story Lola and Charlie go to the library so Lola can take out her favourite book "Beetles, Bugs and Butterflies". However, the book is not there, and here is where it all goes wrong: Lola keeps on going on and on and on about how much she wants to read her favourite book, to the extent that half the book - at least it feels like it !!! - is Lola saying "But I really really want Beetles, Bugs and Butterflies".
We bought the book 5 months ago and have read it only a few times. I noticed that on the cover it says that the story is based on an episode of the TV series, which, I believe, is not written by Lauren Child. So, to all newcomers to the world of Charlie and Lola, I sincerely recommed the older books written by Child herself - they are a real treasure!

Whilst this book may not be up to the usual standards, it is however endearing, being empathic with the target age group and full of fun. Both my children (age 6 and 12) found this book enchanting and, being written from a child's perspective of life, the disappointments and high points are faithfully illustrated. The references to the Chimpanzees for example (superimposed in a forest) were relevant to real life. There are many messages within the text (eg, Charie is as patient and helpful as ever to his small sister; people are quiet in the library; much information can be gained from books - all positive messages to pass on to this generation).

When ever charlie and lola comes on to cbeebies i cant help and sit down and when it with my daughter. every night at bedtime my daughter always picks charlie and lola
