Beautifully written book about the Biafran War July 12, 2010 P. Kulkarni (Bristol UK) I loved the way she described the War from a humane aspect. During war, we read numbers and statistics. One can feel the pain, sorrow and love about the war when you read about someones lives. She has related each person's character beautifully, entangled their lives and has created a master love story.
A good read June 1, 2010 Ms. Nicole A. Young (UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Excellent read, if you like this sort of thing (ie african culture told in a way that is accessible to those with English culture). Engaging story too.
So beautifully written May 23, 2010 Anthony Peter Swallow (Bruxelles, Belgique) Wow! This is a book I will not forget : so beautifully written, such masterful style, so believable. The story takes place at a particularly terrible time in the history of Nigeria, but the story is so gripping that to read it is a huge pleasure. What I particularly liked was that the author did not adopt the omniscient narrator's voice. This allows each of the three major characters, as well as the other principal people in the story, to be totally believable : they are real people with motivations and ways of acting that are not explained away by the wave of a godlike hand. Ugwu, Odenigbo, Olanna; Kainene, Richard ... all equally fascinating. Time spent with these characters during the reading is really enriching; I really cared about what happened to each single one.
Add to that the brilliant construction which makes you want to keep turning the pages to confirm your hunches or refute them; the small clues, the little signs, the lack of over dramatisation and the consummate writing skill that Chimamanda displays : you will not regret reading this novel, and, like me, you will surely be sad when it finishes.
Half of a Yellow Sun April 5, 2010 Mrs. K. P. Soares (UK) Gripping. This book is a great read. At first I struggled slightly with remembering the African names, however, once I became familiar with the characters, I very soon got into it, only occassionally having to flip back as a refresher. Fantastic book! Would recommend to everyone!
Moving tale of war and peace March 1, 2010 Oracle Half of a Yellow Sun is an elegant yet harrowing book, a story about the destructive powers of war. Thematically it's similar to Captain Corelli or Birdsong, as like these other novels it plots the deterioration of an idyllic world under a war that the central characters neither asked for nor can control.
The novel is powerful and moving, driven by Adichie's superbly drawn characters. But its main achievement is the subject matter. Too often when we see TV news reports of wartorn famine-stricken African nations, the people are dehumanised into passive objects of pity. Adichie, through her story of love and adversity, gives the starving and downtrodden back their dignity. A remarkable novel.
